Barnes & Nobles, from not cool to cool again, what an era.
If you miss touching books, feeling the texture of magazine glossy pages, wandering around alleys filled with them and discover a great front page or a weird title, grab a mag or a book and sit to see if you want to buy it, then B&N is the place for you.

Books - As you may know this is not the place to find underground books, breakthrough essays or edgy writers, if you don't mind you still can find interesting mainstream books. Of course you will find all the best sellers and stuff you see on TV.

Magazines - This is maybe the Madeleine de Proust moment of you interaction with this store chain. You are all of a sudden interacting with real images, instead of maniacally scrolling through pictures online and numbing your mind, you take your time, maybe think, remember something, what a great experience.

Coffee shop - This is a trick. If you don't want to hang out in a loud place where people booze, this place has a Starbucks with a lot of sitting room where you can sit, read, hang out.

And lastly you can find very cheap postal cards: 25 cents, what a bargain.

I ordered two books online and did store pick up.

I got my confirmation and my notification stating that my order was ready to be picked up. I followed the instructions in the email and waited in the line for about 15 minutes.

When I got up to a store worker at the register, I was told that store pick ups, even though the email directs you to do something different, are actually at the center of the store in customer service.

OK then, so I head over that way and I have my order confirmation up with my ID, and this order confirmation has a barcode on it.

The woman working customer service refused to look at the barcode, or take my order number, she only took my phone number and my last name - without ever actually looking at my ID.

After spending less than five seconds looking, she tells me that there is no order in their system with my name or my phone number. I must be at the wrong store and she sends me away.

I then ask her to please look at the confirmation it states that I was in the correct store and that my order is ready.

She then gets a horrible attitude, tells me she doesn’t know what I want her to do and then pulls in another worker who has just as horrible of an attitude.

This new woman also refuses to look at my order information, and also just asks for my last name.

I spelled it again for her, and she tells me oh we must’ve thought you spelled your name differently. They magically found my order.

I feel this is why the email instructions state to show your ID, when a customer does that the store worker should at least look at the ID

Imagine, they sent me away originally.

I then pointed out that both of the books were severely damaged, and should not have been sold as new books.

Both women proceeded to stare at me.

The only reason why they got two stars is because they actually had my order even though they told me originally they didn’t.

Very small not a wow factor. I wish it was bigger . I like the Barnes and Noble that should be comfortable. it is near the strip you should have a 2 level with a beautiful cafe. I just felt it was like an airport book store. Very disappointed

I came in today to look for one book by Angela Davis called “Freedom is a Constant Struggle: Ferguson, Palestine, and the Foundations of a Movement” as well as another book called “Except Palestine: The Limits of Progressive Politics”. Unfortunately, they had neither in stock; however; they did have front and center Netanyahu’s biography, along with several books varying between educational to the glorification of Israel, for example - “The Genius of Israel” was displayed prominently as well. It also had marketing materials around it indicating it’s an “amazing read & amazing value”.

Book stores are sacred (well, I guess not corporate ones but you get the gist) and are foundational to enabling people to educate themselves. At a time like this, I’m incredibly disappointed to see Barnes & Noble pushing a very clear narrative and one with bias.

I’m hoping the popular books I was looking for are simply out of stock because they were just recently bought out - if that’s the case I will promptly edit this review. I sense that that is not actually the case though.

I suggest Barnes & Noble take its role as a knowledge provider more seriously and ensure they provide readers the opportunity to educate themselves with a lens through all sides of a matter - not just one - and make sure they keep relevant books stocked in times that matter seemingly the most.

Won’t be back. Over to Boulder bookstore I go!
